Carter Countians can step back 150 years Thursday and explore Carter County and the Civil War.
The Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library will host the Civil War Round Table on May 29 from 6 to 8 p.m., offering local history and genealogy buffs a chance to dig deep into the past — and into their family trees.
Carter County Historian Scott Bowers said the event will not only look into local history during the period of the Civil War, but also local family ties to events of that time. Bowers said that genealogy assistance will be available for those wishing to look into their own family histories.
Bowers will present some little-known facts about Civil War history in this area, including information on the treason trials that took place during the Reconstruction period after the war ended.
He said many people were prosecuted in those trials for offenses as small as providing food to Confederate forces.
The event is being hosted by the library and is sponsored by Local Camp 2083 of the Sons of Confederate Vetera
