Elizabethton’s Parks and Recreation Department is on a mission to create additional opportunities for visitors to the city parks.
One of the biggest changes will set the stage for a range of park entertainment – literally.
The department is building a permanent covered performance stage in the Covered Bridge Park. The 24-foot by 18-foot stage will be built on the eastern edge of the park, facing the Covered Bridge and the Doe River.
Parks and Recreation Director Mike Mains said the goal is to complement the park’s atmosphere.
“We looked at different parks areas around the region to get ideas,” Mains said. “City staff agreed it was best to have a natural, rustic stage that blends well with the openness and beauty of the bridge.”
He added the area is a good choice for the stage, because the trees will provide shade for events.
“We had a few concerts last year in the lot behind the Fire Department across from City Hall,” Mains said. “While it was convenient for parking, and we could use the bathrooms at City Hall, it was an extremely warm location. There were very few trees to give shade and cool it down.”
The new stage’s inaugural event is planned for July 4 from 1 to 4 p.m., and will feature two bands, inflatables, several other events and a special Fourth of July ceremony.
After that, different concerts are planned through September.
“The things we can do there are endless,” Mains said. “We can host anything from beauty pageants to outdoor plays. There are endless possibilities.”
The stage will cost about $7,500 and is being built by city staff.
