A 56-year-old man died Thursday after apparently shooting himself in the cab of a pickup parked at Lacy Graveyard in Watauga.
Watauga Police Department Chief James Whaley was on routine patrol when he found Scott bleeding in the truck around 3 p.m., Carter County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy James Parrish said.
Parrish said it was not clear how long the man had been at the cemetery but officers did not think it had been a long time.
The Carter County Rescue Squad responded to the scene and treated Scott before Wings Air Rescue arrived to take him to the hospital. Responders on the scene said the man was bleeding heavily from the gunshot wound.
Parrish said more information would be available Friday morning.
