East Tennessee Amateur wraps up

ELIZABETHTON – The 2015 Carter County Bank East Tennessee Amateur had a first Sunday as it was the first time that the championship flight was shortened to 45 holes, but it was due to heavy rains.

It was a repeat winner as Cayman Ratliff carded a 32 on Sunday’s front nine to defeat his cousin Brandon Worley by two shots. The duo of Sullivan South graduates entered the final round tied at nine-under-par. The final group, along with third-place finisher Jack Rhea were approaching the 12th hole when lighting forced the remaining golfers off the back nine. After that the clouds opened and rain fell causing the tournament to be cut short.

Ratliff was aiming at his scoring record from a season ago when he won with a total of 16-under in the 10-shot win. He also became the fifth player to win multiple East Tennessee Amateur crowns.

“It feels great. I played really good on the front and I knew coming into today that it may be a nine-hole day,” Ratliff said. “I knew I had to get off to a good start.”

In the senior division it was old hat as Mike Poe won the flight for the seventh time. The Tennessee Wesleyan College head men’s golf coach fired a 67 to win the senior crown by two shots over Jeff Isaacs. Isaacs did take the 50-54 age group, five shots better than Tony Gouge, Jeff Andrews and James Fender. Steve Morton was the winner in the 60-over flight with a three-day total of 226.

“It was a good win. I didn’t play real well the first two days,” said Poe. “Today I was pretty sharp and drove the ball well, made some putts. It was a good day.”

Lacie York was the first Carter County Bank East Tennessee Amateur Women’s Division champion. She fired a one-under 71 on Sunday to win by two shots over Ann Sullivan. York’s 71 was the only round under-par in the division. Michaela Matheson was third after a final-round 79.

Brian Allen, Josh Shaver, Dylan Bailey and Troy Baker all won their flight championships.
