Roan Mountain State Park Weekly Schedule

Check out these events happening this week at Roan Mountain State Park.

Wednesday
• 7 p.m. Evening Yoga. Soothe your mind, body, and spirit by taking the time to stop and contemplate the natural beauty of Roan Mountain as you unwind from your busy day with some easy stretches and relaxation techniques. This class is beginner-friendly! Please wear loose-fitting clothing and bring a mat or a towel. Meet Ranger Meg at the Amphitheater.

Thursday
• 10 a.m. Peg Leg Mine Adventure. Come explore the Peg Leg mine trail to learn about Roan Mountain State Park’s unique history. Meet Nathan at the Visitor’s Center for a moderate 0.4 mile hike. Please wear appropriate hiking shoes.
• 2:30 p.m. Balds Hike. This moderately strenuous hike will be 5 miles total and have an elevation gain of just over 675 feet. We’ll begin at Carver’s Gap and hike the Appalachian Trail north to Jane Bald, then leave the AT up to Grassy Ridge. We’ll stop for snacks and views on the ridge and head back the way we came. Please pack snacks, a jacket, water, and wear sturdy shoes for hiking. Meet Amanda at Park Headquarters to caravan the 8 miles up to the trailhead. This program is weather dependent.
• 7 p.m. Sunset Hike. Meet Nathan at Picnic Shelter 3 for a moderately difficult hike to the Raven Rock Overlook. Bring a flashlight, some water, and wear comfortable shoes. This program is weather dependent.

Friday
• 10:30 a.m. Edible and Medicinal Plant Hike. Join Amanda at the Tom Gray Trailhead for a short hike to learn the interesting historic and present uses of our forest plants. Please wear shoes appropriate for hiking.
• 1:30 p.m. How to Build a Fire. Meet Nathan at the Campground Fire Ring (just beyond the Tom Gray Trailhead) to learn how to properly build and maintain a fire. This program is weather dependent.
• 2 p.m. Monarchs. Join Amanda at the Miller Farmstead parking area for a presentation on these impressive migrators. Wear shoes appropriate for a short hike; we’ll tour around the Farmstead to learn why Roan Mountain is one of their favorite stops…and hopefully spot a few butterflies!
• 3 p.m. Rocks Rock. Just how did these mountains form? Come explore the Cloudland Trail for a better understanding of the geology at Roan Mountain State Park. Please wear appropriate hiking shoes.
• 4 p.m. Beach Volleyball. Who says you can’t play a beach game in the mountains? Join Amanda at the Volleyball Court (just across from the Pool) for a game or two. Bring water!
• 7 p.m. Carl and Kathryn Brickey – Live bluegrass music at the Park Amphitheater! In case of inclement weather, the entertainment will be moved to Picnic Shelter 3 (just across from the Camp Store).

Saturday
• Noon. At the Farmstead: Hope Russell. Join this talented young lady on the front porch of the Miller Farmstead for sweet folk and gospel unes. Entertainment held from 12-2 p.m.
• 2:30 p.m. Summer Tree Identification. did you know the Southern Appalachians have more tree species than all of Europe combined? Meet Amanda at Park Headquarters for a short hike to learn some common species you ’ll find while hiking in our area. Please wear shoes appropriate for hiking, and bring water.
• 4 p.m. Map and Compass. People have used a map and compass throughout history to help them find their way. Come out to this program to learn the parts of a map and compass and how you can use them together! Meet Nathan at the Camp Store. This program is weather dependent.
• 5:30 p.m. River Walk. Meet Nathan at the Camp Store for an up-close look at our river critters. Wear shoes and clothes you do not mind getting wet—we will be getting in the water. This program is weather dependent.
• 7 p.m. Real Steel. These talented young local bluegrass musicians will be sure to impress with their picking skills! Meet at the Park Amphitheater. In case of inclement weather, entertainment will be moved to Picnic Shelter 3 (just across from the Camp Store).
• 9 p.m. Cabin Campfire. meet Amanda at the Cabin Campfire Ring, down the trail just behind Cabin 26. S’more roasting, joke-telling, stories and more.

Sunday
• 10 a.m. Knots. Pull together with Nathan at the Conference Center to learn the basics of knot tying.
• 1 p.m. Bears. Meet Amanda at the Conference Center to learn all about Roan Mountain’s largest land mammal.

Programs are free of charge, but donations to the park are always welcome in order to continue to offer free programming.
Programs are for all ages unless otherwise noted. Programs begin promptly at their scheduled time.
For all hikes, wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes and bring drinking water.
In case of inclement weather, live music/entertainment will be held at Picnic Shelter 3.
