Police and firefighters cloesd off the area around Dugger & Cole law firm in downtown Elizabethton on Monday afternoon after the attorneys’ office received a suspicious package.

A suspicious package delivered to a city law firm prompted police and firefighters to cordon off a part of downtown Elizabethton late Monday afternoon.
The Dugger & Cole law firm, located at 625 E. Elk Avenue, Elizabethton, called 911 after receiving the suspicious package. After police and firefighters arrived on scene, one lane of traffic in the 600 block was closed off, as was Post Office Street. Police tape cordoned off the sidewalks around the business.
“There is nothing to indicate there is anything explosive in nature,” Elizabethton Police Department Capt. Joy Shoun said.
However, because the contents were suspicious and unknown, Shoun said the Carter County Rescue Squad’s Haz-Mat team was called in to help with the investigation as a precaution.
Further details were not immediately available but Shoun said the police department will release more information as it becomes available.
