Cleo Daisy Potter Oakes

Cleo Daisy Potter Oakes, 96, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, October 14, 2015, at Roan Highlands Nursing Center.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Jackson Garfield and Laura Bell Jones Potter.
Mrs. Oakes worked several years at the Charles A Cannon Jr. Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a good mother to her children and all the children in the neighborhood. She worked hard, providing for her family. She loved to make quilts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Dayton Brownlow “Jack” Oakes; a daughter, Brenda Banks; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters and six brothers.
Survivors include three daughters, Ora Lee Andrews and husband Claude, Butler, Jackie Thomas and husband Oscar and Sandra Henson and husband Allen, all of Roan Mountain; six sons, Kenneth Oakes and wife Carolyn, Lenoir, N.C., Rudy Oakes and wife Susie, Roger Oakes and wife Barbara, Tommy Oakes and wife Ann, Terry Oakes and wife Pamela, all of Roan Mountain, and Larry Oakes and wife Louise, Banner Elk, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; her sister-in-law, Gladys Potter; and a very special friend, Joda Ollis.
Funeral services for Cleo Daisy Potter Oakes will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, October 16, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John McCoury and Pastor Jeff Boone officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 17, in the Brewer Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center, Dr. Vivian Clark and Nurse Practitioner Anna Dill. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday to go to the cemetery.
