Cash 1 will collect items for the food bank and the animal shelters. Anyone dropping off a donation will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Walmart gift card.

EHDA – Ghost Riders Motorcycle Club
Annual Toy Drive
Saturday, Nov. 7 and Saturday Nov. 20
10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day
Elizabethton Housing and Development Agency and Ghost Riders Motorcycle Club will host it’s annual toy drive at Walmart from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. accepting new and lightly used toys as well as cash donations.

Grace Baptist Church’s grief recovery seminar and support group will meet weekly in Classroom B at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Grief Share video sessions feature nationally recognized experts on grief recovery topics. Seminar sessions include “Living With Grief,” “The Journey of Grief,” “The Effects of Grief,” “Why?” and “Stuck in Grief.” Grief Share is co-sponsored by Sycamore Shoals Hospital Spiritual Care Department. The sessions are led by Grace Baptist Pastor Travis Tyler.

Beginning Sign Language classes
Memorial Park Community Center
Tuesdays 6-7:30 p.m.
Senior Services at Memorial Park Community Center, 510 Bert St., will offer a six-week Beginning Sign Language class from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting Sept. 15. Learning sign language is a useful communication skill that stimulates the brain. Instructor Carol Harmon is nationally certified through the
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
This class is open to all ages and is $30 for the six-week series. Please register in person at Memorial Park Community Center.

Handmade Journals
Saturday, Nov. 14

Make your own book! These little journals can be anything you like – a unique sketchbook, a special diary, a baby shower keepsake. We’ll use professional book-board and a variety of cover papers. The finished book is 5” by 6½” and has 20 pages. The Coptic stitch binding means the book lies flat when open.
Instructor: Margaret Crouch
Cost: $25.00 includes materials, bring an awl if you have one.

Surviving the Holidays

Tennessee Handgun Permit Training

Rocky Top Gun Permit School will hold a Tennessee Handgun Permit training class beginning at 8:30 a.m. The class will be held at the B&K Community Center on the Bristol Highway in Elizabethton. Ken Potter, State Certified Instructor, will be instructing the class. Cost of the class is $50. “Political Think Tank”

Milligan College Art Gallery, Derthick Hall
Art exhibition will feature the works of Milligan faculty members. Opening reception at 11 a.m. Oct. 24. Alice Anthony, Nick Blosser and Art Brown have a combined 80 years of experience creating art. Anthony’s photography will focus on Elvis fans at Graceland. Blosser will showcase paintings in watercolor and egg tempera. Brown will exhibit his printmaking work. Cost: FREE.

Winterfest Art Show

Kick off the holidays at Sycamore Shoals State Park. The Watauga Valley Art League exhibition and sale begins with a reception on November 29 with great opportunities for holiday shopping! Artwork from the Watauga Valley Art League will remain on display during regular park hours throughout the month of December until January 3rd, 2016.

Blood Drive at Oak Street Baptist

The Blood Mobile will be at Oak St Baptist Church, 804 Oak St. The flooding in South Carolina has caused a shortfall in available blood because thousands of pints of blood could not be donated. As you help by donating blood in Elizabethton, you may be helping family and friends in flooded South Carolina.

Elizabethton Senior Center Veterans’ Breakfast

7-9 a.m.
The Elizabethton Senior Center, 428 East G St., will host a free Veterans’ Breakfast to all veterans and those currently serving from 7 to 9 a.m. The menu will consist of biscuits/gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, apple butter, juice and coffee. Charge for guests is $3.

Old Time Yule

The Old Time Yule holiday celebration will be held at the Miller Farmstead. The celebration will include traditional music and treats, and tours of the historic Farmstead.

Fraser Fir Lighting

The annual lighting of the Fraser Fir at 6 p.m. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with Friends of Sycamore Shoals providing hot cider. This year’s honorary lighter will be Angelee Murray, founder of Red Legacy Recovery. Music will be provided by Miss Watauga Valley, the EHS Choral Club, East Side Elementary Fifth Grade, and the Happy Valley Trumpeters.
