Monday, Feb. 22
Carter County Commission Tourism Promotion Task Force will meet at 6 p.m. in the Mayor’s Conference Room on the second floor of the Carter County Courthouse.
Tuesday, Feb. 23
The Carter County Democratic Women’s Club will meet at Hunan restaurant, 361 West Elk Ave. The meeting starts at 6 p.m., but come by 5:30 p.m. if you want to order dinner. Expect lots of good political talk on state and national issues, and planning for the party’s nominating convention.
Thursday, Feb. 25
A representative from CASA will be the guest speaker for the meeting of the Lions Club of Elizabethton. The Lions Club meets the second and fourth Thursdays at Beef-O-Brady’s on Hudson Drive. Also, a representative from CHIPS (family violence center) will speak at the March 10 meeting. The public is invited to attend all meetings. Also, those wishing for assistance in getting glasses may request an application at Lions Club, P.O. Box 1391, Elizabethton, TN 37644. Be sure to enclose your name and return address.
Friday, Feb. 26
Court Appointed Special Advocates is hosting its first Carter County Steering Committee meeting to raise awareness about the effectiveness of CASA in helping children in the court system, as well as educating about how to get involved. The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at 305 Lawson Ave., Ste. 2, in Elizabethton.
Saturday, Feb. 27
Trump Campaign Event to benefit the Veterans of Foreign Wars will take place from 2-4 p.m. The event is open to all to learn about the tenets of Donald Trump’s campaign. Angel Steps Praise Dancers will provide entertainment as well as the Covered Bridge Cloggers. There will be face painting and a cookie party as well as free signs and stickers for all. Southern Countrymen Band will play at the Buffalo Ruritan, 200 Willowbrook Road, Bluff City, from 7-10 p.m. Admission is $5 and $1 for children.
Beginning Sewing — Learn to sew an easy starter project! Class is designed for true beginners. Topics covered pattern layout, importance of grain line / seam allowances, pattern terminology and many much more. Instructor Donna Horowitz will teach students to sew a bathrobe as their project. Please bring: sewing machine and manual, basic sewing supplies, fabric and pattern. Instructor will provide a supply list at the first class. Bring your machine to the first class. This is a 4-part class series with classes being held on Feb. 6, 20, 27 and March 5 from 1-4 p.m. each class day at Sycamore Shoals State Park. Cost for all four classes is $80 plus supplies.

Rocky Fork State Park Friends Group initial meeting will take place from 10-11 a.m. to discuss with TN State Park staff and local hiking clubs the possibility of forming a non-profit friends group for the maintenance and enhancement of the purpose, programs and functions of the park. Grass Roots Clean Carter County Committee will meet at 8 a.m. at the Coffee Company to discuss a presentation which will go before the Carter County Commission seeking to reduce litter by providing proper outlets for disposal, education initiatives and increased enforcement of existing laws.
Vegetable Gardening — Gardener extraordinaire, Ben Hunter, will be joining us to share his experiences and techniques for growing the garden of your dreams! Sponsored by the Northeast Tennessee Master Gardeners, of which Hunter is a member. The workshop will be held at Sycamore Shoals State Park from 9 a.m. until noon. The workshop is free and advanced registration is not required.

The class will be held from 9 a.m. until noon with a cost of $20 (all supplies furnished).

Elk Ave. for caregivers of friends or relatives suffering from Alzheimers or another form of dementia. Attending the support group can help people to feel less isolated and to make connections with others facing similar challenges. Carter Mansion Celebration & Militia Muster — Join us for two days of history, traditional arts and family fun as we celebrate the oldest frame house in Tennessee, and the historically prominent Carter family. Travel back to the 1780’s and tour the Carter Mansion. Witness living history reenactors demonstrating aspects of 18th century life, and see local craftsmen showcasing traditional skills. This event will be held at the Carter Mansion on Broad Street Extension from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Handspinning for Beginners — Have you always wanted to learn to spin? This class is meant for those who have never used a spinning wheel before and it taught by Margaret Crouch. You’ll learn the basics of drafting wool and using the wheel to make yarn. If you have a spinning wheel, plan to bring it, along with your spare bobbins. The workshop will be held from 1:30-4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals. Cost of the workshop is $35 which includes wool roving ready to spin. Participants who already have a spinning wheel are asked to bring it with them to class.

Deerslayer 5K Obstacle Course Race and Fun Run will include 18-20 obstacles throughout a 5K race on paved and unpaved terrain. Participants must be 18 or older and may compete in the competitive race, which includes all obstacles and awards cash prizes, or they may run in the Fun Run and attempt obstacles. It will take place at Winged Deer Park in Johnson City. You must register in advance at www.jcdeerslayer.com or in person at the Memorial Park Community Center in Johnson City.
Landscape Seminar & Plant Auction — An exciting array of unusual ornamental & native perennials, trees and shrubs will be auctioned during this event. A great opportunity to add new species to your landscape! Sponsored by The UT Extension Service, East Tennessee Nursery Association, and the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce. This event will be held at Sycamore Shoals State Park from 9 a.m. until noon.

Community Plant Exchange — The front parking at Sycamore Shoals State Park lot will be bustling this morning! Bring cuttings and potted outdoor and indoor plants, to exchange for species you don’t have—a fun way to meet other gardeners and increase your collection. This event will be held from 9-10 a.m. in the front parking lot.
Basketry – Around the Block — This basket is easier to weave than it looks. The pattern is created by using dyed reed on one half and natural on the other for each side of the basket. Dimensions: 6” cube. Bring garden or kitchen shears, an old hand towel, pencil, small measuring tape, small spray bottle of water, and strong clothespins. The instructor for this workshop is Candy Alexander. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Park and cost to attend is $22.

Oil Painting for Beginners and Beyond: Lighthouse and Landscape — This beginner class is also open to anyone who has experience with oils and is taught by Rhonda Abbott. We will complete a seascape with focus on perspective and adding dynamic quality to your art! Please bring oil paint in white, blue, yellow, red, and dark brown; paper towels; linseed oil; a stretched canvas or canvas board; pencil and ruler; and at least 2 paint brushes (1 large and 1 small that comes to a point). The workshop will be held at Sycamore Shoals State Park from 9 a.m. until noon. Cost to attend is $25 (supplies not included).
