Three residents at a home in the East Side community of Elizabethton made it out safely after a fire sparked in their bedroom at 1006 Nave St.

Eliabethton Fire Chief Barry Carrier said the Elizabethton Fire Department arrived two minutes after they received the call at 1:27 p.m.

“When they arrived, smoke and flames were coming out of the bedroom window and all occupants had left the residence,” Carrier said. “They were home, but they were able to get out.”

The fire triggered the smoke alarm, which the property owner heard. Carrier said he then evacuated a 60-year-old female and a 5-year-old boy. The female was later transported to the Emergency Room due to smoke inhalation, he said.

Carrier reported the bedroom was damaged by the flames, and the rest of the home suffered smoke damage.

The EFD had to cut off power to the home, which Carrier said would prevent them from returning to the home for a few days, however he said they would likely contact the American Red Cross for assistance.

The initial report to firefighters said oxygen tanks were in the home, but Carrier said these caused no problems as they were in another room.

“They made a quick knock down of the fire,” Carrier said, adding it took only three minutes to kill the flames.

The smoke continued, as firefighters removed debris smoldering in the bedroom.
