Members of the Carter County Commission voted to appoint a new constable to serve the county’s 1st District on Monday evening.

Earlier this year, long-time Constable Landon Pritchard, who serve the Stoney Creek community, passed away leaving his position vacant. When an elected county position becomes vacant due to death or resignation, the Carter County Commission is charged with appointing a replacement to finish out the remainder of the unexpired term of office.

Three individuals applied for the appointment to 1st District Constable — Joshua Benfield, Gary Perry, and Robert Reed. When the votes were tallied Monday evening, the Commission selected Reed to fill the vacant constable position.

All three of the applicants were given the opportunity to address the commissioners and answer any questions they had regarding their qualifications and experience.

During his time to address the Commission, Reed said he had no prior law enforcement or constable experience but that he was willing to learn. Reed said he has spoken with Constable Ken Potter, who provides the training for local constables, and Potter is willing to provide him with the training he needs to perform the duties of a constable.

Reed also spoke about his prior experience in the military, citing that he served two years in Korea.

For the past 24 years Reed has lived in Carter County and he owns a small engine repair shop on the Bristol Highway near the intersection with Watauga Road.

When the time came for nominations, Commissioner Willie Campbell nominated Reed, Commissioner Nancy Brown nominated Perry, and Commissioner Ross Garland nominated Benfield.

When the votes were counted 13 members of the Commission voted for Reed which confirmed him as the newest Constable in Carter County.
