According to Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford, shortly before 10 p.m. on Monday deputies with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office responded to 147 Tower Road on a report of a shooting.

Lunceford said upon arriving at the scene his deputies found Steven D. Long, whom Lunceford said was suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. According to court documents, the injury “appeared to be a through and through gun shot to his upper right torso.”

“Mr. Long stated he had been walking down Tower Road when he was shot by someone in a small car that had fled the scene,” Lunceford said. “Mr. Long was intoxicated and uncooperative with officers.”

After speaking with Steven Long, CCSO Capt. Jeff Markland said officers then went to the man’s home where they spoke with his sister, Connie Long, who also lives at the residence.

“She reported to officers that she had not seen her brother since before dark,” Markland said. “Officers then observed blood drops inside of the residence on the floor and on a pillow. When asked how the blood got there Mrs. Long stated that she had no idea.”

Capt. Jeff Markland said he and Investigator Jenna Markland responded to the scene to begin an investigation into the incident.

“I found what appeared to be a fresh bullet hole that went into the victim’s bedroom. There had been a calendar placed over the hole to avoid it being detected,” Capt. Jeff Markland said, adding Connie Long said she “had no idea” how the bullet hole had gotten in the wall.

Capt. Jeff Markland said he then spoke with David Mast, who was in the bedroom at the opposite end of the trailer. Mast told investigators he had heard Connie Long and Steven Long arguing and then a noise which was “possibly a gun shot.”

At that time, officers arrested Connie Long and transported her to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office.

“Upon arrival at the jail, Inv. (Jenna) Markland and I then spoke with Mrs. Long again and, after reading her Miranda Rights, she decided to tell us that she and her brother had been in an argument and that he was extremely intoxicated,” Capt. Jeff Markland said. “She stated that he came out of his bedroom and began threatening her and that he came at her with what she thought was possibly a knife. She stated at that time she retrieved a .22 caliber rifle from her bedroom and shot Mr. Long in self-defense. There was an open pocket knife lying on the floor in the living room of the residence.”

Investigators then charged Connie Long with aggravated assault under domestic violence and she was booked into the Carter County Detention Center on Tuesday morning. She is being held under a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in Carter County General Sessions Court on Wednesday morning.

Steven Long was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was arrested Tuesday morning by officers of the Elizabethton Police Department in an unrelated incident.

Officers of the EPD arrested Steven Long, 50, of 129 Tower Road, Roan Mountain, around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday and charged him with public intoxication. According to police reports, officers of were dispatched to a service station on West Elk Avenue around 3:30 a.m. after a 911 caller reported an intoxicated man was at the business and causing a disturbance.
