Howard Edward Waters Sr., 69, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 11, 2014.
He was the son of the late James and Gracie Canter Waters and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Howard “Edward” Waters Jr.; a granddaughter, Jessica Price; a sister, Mae Campbell; and his mother-in-law, Polly Birchfield.
Mr. Waters was a retired roofer and former owner of Howard Waters Roofing. He enjoyed hiking, fishing and hunting. He also loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed working in his garden and he had taken care of the family cemetery for several years.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Betty Birchfield Waters, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Elizabeth Waters, Elizabethton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Daniel Price, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Rebecca and Raymond Williams, Elizabethton; six grandsons and six granddaughters, Michael and Tiffany Price, Knoxville, Benjamin Waters and Keisha Arney, Elizabethton, Samantha Price, Pittsburgh, Pa., Gracie Waters, Troy Williams, Domnick Bethel, Candance Waters, Shelby Williams and Elijah Waters, all of Elizabethton, and Bryant O’Bannon, Henryetta, Okla.; three great-grandsons, Nathaniel and Christopher Price, Knoxville, and Elijah Arney, Elizabethton; two great-granddaughters, Kamren Waters and Summer Carroll, Elizabethton; four brothers and their wives, Eugene and Shirley Waters, Phillip and Elizabeth Waters and Mark Waters, all of Elizabethton, and Claude and Janie Waters, Greeneville, Tenn.; a sister, Rachel Clipse, Elizabethton; and his two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, who he also thought of as his sisters and brothers, Bobbie and Jimmy Anderson, Regina Grindstaff, Elizabethton, and Tommy Coffee, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Waters will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Frank Osbourne officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, prior to the service, or at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Raymond Williams, 105 Journeys End Road, Elizabethton, at anytime. The graveside service will be conducted at noon Tuesday, April 15, in the Stout Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be Andrew Anderson, Wade Anderson, Tommy Coffee, Steve Odom, David Birchfield, Adam Birchfield, Tony Moffitt and Joe Raney. Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Waters, Jimmy Anderson, Chris Chrishon, his grandsons and his brothers. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to go in procession. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice members, Greg Matny, Ruby Barnett and Ivy.
