An Elizabethton woman has been indicted in connection with a fatal car crash in September 2013 and will make her first Criminal Court appearance on that indictment today.
Chyanne Elizabeth Gobble, 21, of 400 M Street, was indicted by a Carter County Grand Jury on Monday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with death.
The charges against Gobble stem from a motor vehicle accident which occurred on the Elizabethton Highway in the area of Taylortown Road in which she reportedly struck a pedestrian, who later died as a result of his injuries, and then fled the scene of the accident. The pedestrian was identified as 39-year-old Christopher Dale Hughes.
According to police reports, officers of the Elizabethton Police Department were dispatched to the accident just minutes before 10 p.m. on September 12, 2013 on a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
“Mr. Hughes’ vehicle had become disabled on the roadside and he went to cross the road when he was struck,” states EPD Patrol Officer Trevor Salyer in his original report on the accident.
Police later received information that Gobble was the driver of the vehicle which fled the scene after her grandfather called 911 and notified police that Gobble had been involved in the accident. According to police, Gobble fled the scene of the crash without attempting to render aid and without notifying the proper authorities that a crash had occurred.
Gobble was arrested in connection with the accident on September 16, 2013, and was transported to the Carter County Detention Center where she posted bond. Police stated at the time of Gobbles arrest that Gobble had admitted being involved in the crash and leaving the scene.
The case against Gobble was originally heard in General Sessions Court but was bound over to the Grand Jury in December. A Grand Jury in March rejected the case and refused to issue a True Bill. The case was prepared for re-indictment and was presented to the Grand Jury again this week. The second presentation resulted in the issuance of a True Bill against Gobble.
Gobble will appear in Carter County Criminal Court before Judge Robert E. Cupp. She had previously scheduled to appear today for the court to hear a status report on the re-indictment.
