Fred E. McNeil, 83, of Hampton, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. McNeil was born in Johnson County, Tenn., but had lived most of his life in Carter County. He was a son of the late S.W. and Mae Belle White McNeil. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank McNeil, Jessie McNeil and Paul McNeil, and a sister, Roxie Reese.
Mr. McNeil retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 49 years. He attended Union Baptist Church and was a member of Braemar Baptist Church. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #750 in Hampton for 57 years and enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Betty Ann Arnett McNeil, of the home; one daughter, Judy Ann McNeil, Elizabethton; one son, Jerry McNeil and wife Carol, Johnson City; two brothers, Spencer McNeil and wife Louise and Otis McNeil and wife Maude, all of Elizabethton; and one sister, Nancy Murray and husband James, Hampton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. McNeil will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Dr. Danny Bright officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 12, in the Butler Memorial Cemetery, Butler, Tenn. Active pallbearers will be R.J. Arnett, Randy Arnett, Bobby Arnett, Andy Arnett, James Murray and Bill Hambrick. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors, his church families at Union Baptist Church and Braemar Baptist Church and the Hampton and Watauga Masonic Lodges. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton at 10 a.m. Thursday to go in procession.
