An Elizabethton man is now facing a charge of driving under the influence after witnesses told deputies he fled a single-vehicle crash.
Robert Lee Ellis, 57, 316 Lovers Lane, was arrested around midnight Tuesday.
Carter County Sheriff’s Department officers were dispatched to Lovers Lane for the crash.
In an incident report, CCSD Deputy Jason Mosier wrote that witnesses told deputies the driver fled on foot. Mosier said that while patrolling the area, he spotted a man who then ran from him.
Mosier said he caught the man, identified as Ellis, and said Ellis told him he had been driving the car that was involved in the crash. Mosier said Ellis smelled of alcohol and performed poorly on field sobriety tests.
After being placed in custody on the DUI charge, Ellis was searched, and Mosier said he found found a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana, one Suboxone strip and a pipe used to smoke marijuana.
