George F. Harrison Sr., United States Navy, retired, 84, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2014, at his home, following an extended illness.
He was the son of the late Charles and Maggie Jones Harrison and was born in Weaver, Ill., although he had made his home in Carter County for 40 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard Harrison, and by 10 brothers and five sisters.
Mr. Harrison was a 20-year veteran of the United States Navy, having served during both the Korean War and Vietnam War. Since his retirement from the Navy in 1971 he participated in the reunions of the U.S.S. Forrestal. He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Treese Harrison, of the home; two daughters, Patricia Bonanno, Jonesborough, and Anita Webb and her companion, Jack Lyons, Burke, Va.; two sons, Ronald Harrison, New York, N.Y., and George Harrison Jr., Hampton; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, or at the residence at other times. A graveside service for Mr. Harrison will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, August 14, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Mr. Bill Schifferer, minister, officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be the doctors, nurses and staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery.
