Elderly woman loses $26,000 in scam

An elderly Elizabethton woman was recently scammed out of $26,000 according to a complaint made to the Elizabethton Police Department by her daughter.
Jenny Harrison told EPD officers that her mother, Margaret Carver, had been contacted by a man who told her she had won $4 million and a new car.
Carver then sent the man three blank checks to an unknown address.
The first check was dated Aug. 26 and made out to Marilyn Darrough for $9,000. The second check was dated Aug. 29 and made out to Darrough for $7,500. The last check was dated Sept. 2 and made out to Alice Downey for $10,000.
