Herman Hill

Herman Hill, 78, of Hampton, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Johnson City Medical Center. Herman was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Dana and Retta Collins Hill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Hill; three sisters, Sally Pierce, Ivory Lewis and Mildred Hill; and two nephews, Neil Moody and Robert Stocton.
Mr. Hill retired from Highway’s Incorporated, where he held various management roles. He was of the Free Will Baptist faith and enjoyed gardening. He was an expert in local history and enjoyed genealogy.
Herman was a very giving and selfless person. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Peters Hill, of the home; daughters, Debbie Jones and husband Tony, Pittsboro, N.C., Valarie Smith, Unicoi, Tenn., and Kathy Leonard, Johnson City; two grandchildren, Andrew Jones and Allison Jones, both of Pittsboro, N.C.; a brother, John Hill and wife Freda, Hampton; three sisters, Jane Lyons, Elizabethton, Mary Shultz and husband Bill, Lenoir City, Tenn., and Susie Moody and husband Bob, Butler, Tenn.; a brother-in-law, Charlie Peters and wife Missy, Unicoi; and two sisters-in-law, Pat Stocton, Charlotte, N.C., and Jane Rainbolt and husband Ken, Hampton. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
A Celebration of Life graveside service for Herman Hill will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16, in the John Whitehead Cemetery with Rev. David Montgomery officiating. Music will be under the direction of Alan Foster. Active pallbearers will be George Collins, George Roberson, Frank Cates, Ray Lewis Jr., Randy Lewis, Jackie Peters, Kenneth Rainbolt and Irby Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be former employees and friends of Highway’s Inc., Jimmy Jones, Kenny Eddington, Lewis Whitehead, R.C. Hamilton, Herman Tolley, Eddie Orr, Jimmy Collins, Mike Collins, Alan Foster, Tommy Church, Hugh Greenwood, Estel Whitehead, his nephews, and his friends of the Tiger Valley Community. A visitation will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m. at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton, prior to the graveside service, which will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16. Friends may also call at the residence at anytime.
