Arvel Fred “Pete” Pate

Arvel Fred “Pete” Pate, 84, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center following an extended illness. Arvel was a native of Elizabethton and a son of the late Fred Pate and Ida Tittle Pate Barnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Monica Pate Brew and Tonya “Tatianna” Pate Baird, and a sister, Agnes Pauline Price.
Mr. Pate retired as a security guard for Murray Guard at Nuclear Fuel Services. He had also been employed as a production supervisor at Beaunit Fibers. He was a United States Army veteran and also served in the National Guard. He served in Japan, two tours of duty in Korea, and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Elizabeth Williams Pate; a daughter, Loretta Pate Eubanks; stepdaughters, Cathy Alesa Bunton and Lois B. Shults-Davis; a brother, Virgil Pate and wife Katherine; a sister, Jewell Pate Linville; grandchildren, Stewart Eubanks, Christopher Brew, Lucas Brew, Issiah Baird, Elizabeth Baird, Kaomi Baird, K.G. Shults, Joseph D. Shults, Lawrence and Scott Shults; and four great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive, and also his grand-dogs, Otto, Reggie and Sebastian.
A service to honor the life of Arvel Fred Pate will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 18, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Mike Richards officiating. Mr. Craig Shelton will provide the eulogy. Music will be under the direction of Dr. Catherine Edwards-Bunton with an instrumental piece by K.G. Shults. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, June 19, at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be K.G. Shults, Joseph D. Shults, Lawrence Scott Shults, Scotty Jack Bunton and Michael Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Pinecrest Baptist Church. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Pinecrest Baptist Church, 2129 Old Lewis Road, Johnson City, TN 37601.
