Helen Guy Vines

Helen Guy Vines, 82, of Hampton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 28, 2015, from her residence, following an extended illness. Helen was born on May 31, 1933 in Avery County, N.C., a daughter of the late Willard and Nora Brown Guy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd James Vines; four brothers, Dayton, Avery, Ed and Lee Guy; five sisters, Orabelle Harmon, Rosie Joyner, May Hollifield, LouElla Smith and Iva Lee Potter; and a granddaughter, Abigail Grindstaff.
Helen was a homemaker, loving mother and grandmother, who loved to shop. She was an avid member of Union Baptist Church and was very faithful to her church. She was also a member of the Union Baptist Church Adult Ladies Class.
Those left to cherish her memory include four sons, Terry Vines and wife Valerie, of Elizabethton, Randall Vines and wife Connie, of Hampton, Bryant Vines, of the home, and Jimmy Vines and wife Pam, of Hampton; one daughter, Angela Vines Erwin and husband Greg, of Hampton; one brother, Claude Guy, of Roseville, Mich.; one sister, Betty Jo Heaton, of Hampton; four grandchildren, Lauren Grindstaff, Ashley Woods and Garrett and Gabe Vines; and three great-grandchildren, Jared Taylor, Logan Grindstaff and Cooper Grindstaff. Several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.
A celebration service to honor the life of Mrs. Helen Guy Vines will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Mike Stout, Rev. Nathan Jennings and Rev. Jack Lloyd officiating. Music will be under the direction of Jared Erwin. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service, or at the residence at anytime. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 1, in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Garrett Vines, Joseph Woods, Dennis “Taz” Erwin, Brandon Grindstaff, Mitchell Morton, Greg Odom, Michael Odom and Chris Russell. Honorary pallbearers will be L.J. Heaton, James “Shade Tree” Matherly, Richard Tester, Smith “Goat” Davenport and all of her Union Baptist Church Family. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, to go in procession to the cemetery.
