Phyllis Johnson Harmon

Phyllis Johnson Harmon, 90, of Raleigh N.C., and formerly of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away on Monday, January 4, 2016, at Duke Raleigh Hospital. She was one of three children born to the late Lewis W. and Sarah (Tester) Johnson on April 9, 1925 in Detroit, Mich., and raised in Beaverdam, N.C.
Phyllis had several careers over her lifetime. During WWII she worked in an airplane factory in Detroit riveting ailerons. In the ’40s/’50s she was a cosmetologist with Breck Shampoo. Later she soldered custom circuit boards at Lebow Products working on equipment used on moon landings, retiring in 1977. She was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church, Elizabethton, Tenn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Floyd Harmon, and brothers, Earl and Roy Johnson of Michigan.
Phyllis is loved and missed by her daughter, Glenda and husband Dennis DeBord of Raleigh, N.C.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Johnson of Commerce, Mich.; and beloved nieces and nephews in Michigan. She will be remembered for the strong, loving, funny woman she was.
A memorial service to honor her life will be conducted by Pastor Mark Fowler of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church on Friday, January 8, at 7 p.m. at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., prior to the service. A small graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 9, at Happy Valley Memorial Park.
