A Hampton man pled guilty to multiple charges Monday morning related to a motor vehicle accident on Saturday where police say he wrecked his car into a house.
Carter County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jeff Markland arrested Roy Shipley, 61, of 199 Swimming Pool Road, Hampton, on Sunday and charged him with driving under the influence, driving on a revoked license and violation of the financial responsibility law.
Shortly before 6 p.m. on Saturday, police and emergency medical personnel were summoned to the home at 206 Swimming Pool Road, Hampton, after a 911 caller reported that a vehicle had crashed into the home.
Markland said when he arrived on scene Carter County Rescue Squad personnel were attending to Shipley and assisting him to stand up.
“Mr. Shipley had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage about his person and was having to be helped in standing,” Markland said. “I then asked Mr. Shipley if he had been drinking and he said ‘Of course, I’m breathing ain’t I.’”
“Mr. Shipley stated that he had been drinking vodka and beer since 4:30 this morning,” Markland added.
Markland arrested Shipley and transported him to the Carter County Detention Center. At the jail, Shipley submitted to an intoximeter test, which showed his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to be at 0.14 percent, which is higher than the state legal limit of 0.08 percent, Markland said.
On Monday morning, Shipley appeared in Carter County General Sessions Court where he entered a guilty plea to the charges against him. Judge Keith Bowers sentenced Shipley to serve two days in jail and 11 months and 29 days on probation on the DUI charge as well as ordering him to pay a $350 fine and court costs. Bowers ordered a $50 fine on the charge of driving on a revoked license and a $25 fine on the charge of violation of financial responsibility.
