Herbert Massengill

Herbert Massengill, 85, of Watauga, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, from Life Care Center of Elizabethton, following an extended illness. Herbert was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Jim Ben Massengill and Nellie Shipley Massengill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Lucy Morris, Oma Jones, Glenna Newton and Lillie Mae Wampler, and two brothers, Robert Massengill and J.W. Massengill.
Herbert retired as a carpenter and was a member of Bunker Hill Christian Church. He loved gardening and sharing his vegetables with his friends.
Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Janice Greene and husband James, of Elizabethton, and Ruby Humphrey, of Piney Flats; one son, Harold Massengill and wife Cathy, of Watauga; three grandchildren, Jessica Greene and Jennifer Greene, both of Elizabethton, and Joshua Humphrey and wife Ginger, of Piney Flats; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan Greene, of Elizabethton, Daniel Humphrey and Ethan Humphrey, both of Piney Flats. Several nieces and nephews, along with the mother of his children, Frances Pearl Massengill, also survive.
A service to honor the life of Herbert Massengill will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Jim Greene and Mr. Evan Wolfe, ministers, officiating. Music will be provided by Christine Tipton and the Eastside Christian Church singers. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7:30 p.m. Friday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, in the Morrell Cemetery with Mr. Charles Fitzsimmons officiating. Active pallbearers will be Terry Jones, Wayne Torbett, Bailey Massengill, Tommy Massengill, Howard Rumley and Tim Greene. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandson and great-grandsons. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at 10 a.m. at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, to go in procession. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the East Side Christian Church Youth Fund, the Fairview Baptist Church Building Fund or the Fairview Baptist Church Youth Fund in honor of Herbert.
