Catherine D. Buchanan Johnson, 64, of Butler, passed away at her home on Thursday, July 14, 2016. Catherine was born in Carter County to the late Fin G. Buchanan and Mildred Calhoun Buchanan McCall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, David Buchanan, and her step-father, Bob McCall.
Catherine was a registered nurse, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Nursing Management. She had worked locally with the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center and Mountain States Health Alliance. Her nieces and nephews were very special to her and she loved to shop with them whenever the opportunity arose. She and her husband, Howard, are both members of First Methodist Church in Elizabethton. She also served as Chaplain for the Order of the Eastern Star and was a graduate of Culinary School. In addition to shopping, she enjoyed cooking and crafting.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 36 years, Howard W. Johnson, of the home; a brother, Michael Buchanan and wife Eleanor of Frankfort, Ill.; and her step-children, Rob Johnson of Ohio, Jennifer Maryanski of Knoxville, Michael Johnson of Indiana, and Rebecca Swing of Wisconsin. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor and celebrate the life of Mrs. Catherine D. Buchanan Johnson will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Niles and Lena Onks. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Monday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery in Hampton. Active pallbearers will be her nephews and step-sons. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Mountain Home Construction. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her special friends and caregivers, Jennifer Clawson and Judy Matthews, for the love and care they gave to Catherine during her illness. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers, may make donations to the American Cancer Society, C/O Lou Cooter, 415 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643 in remembrance of Catherine.
