Tuesday, Aug. 9
Happy Valley Elementary School will be holding a special early registration event called Get the Scoop at Back to School Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Anyone attending the early registration will not need to attend the regular scheduled registration day on Wednesday, Aug. 10, from 8 a.m. until noon.
The Johnson City United Auto Workers Retirees will hold their monthly meeting at 10 a.m. at the Pipefitters Union Hall, 655 Watauga Road, Watauga. Friday, Aug. 12
The Elizabethton Senior Dance Club will hold a dance at the Elizabethton Elks Lodge, No. 1847, 1000 N. Sycamore St., from 7 to 10 p.m. The Rambling Rose Band will provide music. Those attending the dances are asked to bring finger foods to share. There is a $6 door charge. The club holds dances the second and fourth Friday nights of each month. All seniors are welcome.
The Summer Concert Series at Roan Mountain State Park presents Tommy Shortt. All performances will be from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Park Amphitheater. In the event of bad weather, the concerts and other performances will be relocated from the amphitheater to Picnic Shelter 3, which is located next to the park campground.
Saturday, Aug. 13
The annual Trivett Family Reunion will be held at Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church picnic area, located on Riverview Drive, next to the river. The reunion begins at noon and lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Family and friends are invited and asked to bring covered dishes, drinks and desserts to share. Table covers, plates, napkins and eating utensils will be provided. Come join relatives and friends for lunch, fun and games. For more information, call 1-423-647-8487.
The 33rd annual Smith-White-Price Family Reunion will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hampton Christian Church Fellowship Hall, 810 Deerfield Lane, Hampton, behind Hampton High School. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish as well as old photos and any family memorabilia. Trophies will be given. Watauga Valley Fife & Drum Corps — The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications and parades. This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up. Musical experience is welcome but not necessary; just come with a willingness to learn. Meet our volunteer coordinator John Large at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center. Lessons are free of charge, just call and let us know you’re coming!

The Annual James Madison and Ann Bailey Byrd Family Reunion will be held beginning at 1 p.m. at the Lower Brummitt’s Creek Church of the Brethren on NC 197 North near Relief in Mitchell County, N.C. Those planning to attend are asked to bring food for a picnic lunch. A decoration will follow at the cemetery near where the ancestors lived.
GriefShare grief recovery seminar and support group will meet at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Classroom B in Elizabethton each Sunday afternoon from 2 until 4 p.m., starting August 7 and going through November 13. Child care is not provided. GriefShare video sessions feature nationally recognized experts on grief recovery topics. Seminar sessions include “Living with Grief,” “The Journey of Grief,” “The Effects of Grief,” “Why?,” and “Stuck in Grief.” GriefShare is sponsored by Sycamore Shoals Hospital Spiritual Care Department and Grace Baptist Church. Alzheimers Tennessee Caregiver Support Group will meet at noon at Sycamore Springs Senior Living Center at 1504 W. Elk Ave. for caregivers of friends or relatives suffering from Alzheimers or another form of dementia. Attending the support group can help people to feel less isolated and to make connections with others facing similar challenges. Rocky Top Gun Permit School will hold a state certified handgun carry permit school beginning at 8 a.m. The class will be held at 135 Keenburg Road in Elizabethton.
