Northeast State Community College’s Elizabethton campus will see an influx of foot traffic starting today as the fall semester comes to fruition.
The facility will offer free advisement and assist with registration needs leading up to the first day of classes, scheduled for Monday, Aug. 22.
Northeast State Community College at Elizabethton’s director Chris Hitechew added the faculty will be more than happy to assist with students’ needs leading up to the start of the semester.
“This week through next week, we will have advisors at the campus to help with students,” he said. “Students can just come right for a walk-in appointment. Next week, we’ll have as many as four advisors at the campus to help prepare students for the fall semester.”
Individuals preparing for the school year are encouraged to stop by the facility between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to work with advisors, prepare for registration and other necessary items to get ready for school. Students have the options to add classes until Aug. 24 and can still registration for the fall semester if they have the proper paperwork in place.
“It’ll be pushing it, but that will make the process easier having their FAFSA information ready,” Hitechew said. “We’re going to be working to make sure our students have every option available to be ready for the school year. Sheila Bray, who works at our Elizabethton campus, is very dedicated to the job and every student that comes in contact with her says how much of a joy she is.”
As of Monday, Aug. 8, Hitechew said they have approximately 406 students registered for the upcoming semester at the NESCC campus. The director is expecting the number to reach around 500 for the first day of classes, which is a bump up compared to last year.
“It is a very exciting time at Northeast State,” Hitechew said. “There are a lot of little things going on behind the scenes and we’re excited to welcome our students back on campus.”
Adult education classes will also be offered at the campus, Hitechew explained. The classes will begin the same day as the classes for the fall semester.
“If someone doesn’t have their GED and are looking at getting back in school, we’re here to help,” the director said. “We encourage people to stop by the office or call and we’ll get them pointed in the right direction.”
NESCC will offer different means of education for the upcoming year, including the addition of telecommunication for classes that’ll allow students that are either sick, with children or have reasons for being able to be at campus to attend their class and interact with an instructor.
The Elizabethton campus will also see work underway during the fall semester for Biology classes.
“We’ve got our grant funding and we are ready to go,” Hitechew said. “A new sprinkler system will be in place and we’ll work at being able to offer more science classes beginning in the spring semester.”
NESCC also offers various counseling as far as transferring goes. The two-year community college has been able to having very beneficial working partnerships with four-year universities, including East Tennessee State University, according to the director.
Hitechew added that students at the Elizabethton campus can visit northeaststate.edu and visit the Elizabethton campus directory to be put into the direction of a Google calendar. The calendar will be a vital tool preparing for the year, according to the director.
“It will be updated regularly throughout the year,” he said. “Updates on different events, schedules, all of those types of things will be available on the calendar for students to view.”
