David R. Bishop

David R. Bishop, 71, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Saturday, August 13, 2016, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Washington County, Tenn., he was the son of Gertrude Hughes Bishop, Elizabethton, and the late Paul Bishop.
Mr. Bishop retired as a correctional officer. He attended Valley Forge United Methodist Church and had served in the National Guard. He loved bluegrass music and doing genealogy searches.
Those left to cherish his memory, in addition to his mother, include two sons, Brian Bishop and wife Lisa, Boiling Springs, S.C., and Keith Bishop and wife Misty, Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Johnathan, Dustin, Kaelyn, Gage and Nichole; his sister, Paula Bishop, Elizabethton; a lifelong friend, Richard Ryan; the mother of his children, Donna Smith; and close friends, Claudia Gibson, Linda Elliott, Dawn and Jackie Peters and members of the E.H.S. Class of 1962. Several close cousins from Elizabethton, Dunlap and Pikeville, Tenn., also survive.
A Celebration of Life Service to honor the life of Mr. David R. Bishop will be conducted at 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 17, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Mr. Gerald Holly and Pastor Joel Cook, ministers, officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service, or at the residence of his mother, 401 West H Street, Elizabethton, at any time. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Valley Forge United Methodist Church, 3974 Highway 19E, Elizabethton, TN 37643 or to the church or charity of their choice.
