Picking up their third shutout of the season, the Happy Valley Warriors celebrated homecoming in style Friday night as they trampled the Cosby Eagles 64-0 for a Region 1-2A win.
“I am just proud of us for getting a win on homecoming,” said Happy Valley head coach Jason Jarrett. “Many of the Warrior faithful came out. A lot of them attended this game more so than any other game the rest of the year.
“It was great to put a good product on the field tonight,” Jarrett added.
The Happy Valley (4-0, 2-0) defense played relentlessly in the first half and would only give up 33 yards of total offense in the entire game Friday night. The Warriors completely stopped the Cosby (1-4, 0-2) ground game while holding the Eagles to -3 yards rushing.
“It was another great effort by the defense,” Jarrett said. “This gives our defense another shutout— three out of the first four games.”
The Warriors offense, which wasn’t on the field very much Friday night, recorded 350 yards of total offense. Happy Valley senior quarterback Sage Haun was perfect as he connected all four of his passes for 110 yards. Haun finished the night with three passing touchdowns.
“It always starts with the line,” Haun said. “I couldn’t have done it without my line. Our great receivers ran their routes crisp. I could have done it without them.”
Happy Valley receiver Skyler Hyatt finished with 51 yards receiving on two catches. Hyatt had two receiving touchdowns on the night. Warriors Sam Blevins had 33 yards on one catch, while Brayden Sams picked up 26 receiving yards on one catch that resulted in a touchdown.
The Warriors ground game accounted for 240 yards as freshman Will Tittle picked up 116 of those yards on just five carries giving him an average of 23.2 yards per carry. Tittle also had two rushing touchdowns on the night. Tittle was followed up by Dustun Sams, who picked up 57 yards on three touches and a touchdown.
Friday night, the Eagles would start things before being stalled out on their first drive. The Warriors taking the ball on their 49-yard line after the punt didn’t take long to get rolling as Haun found Hyatt on a screen pass for a 49-yard touchdown. Happy Valley kicker Michael Harrah stepped up and booted the point after through to give the Warriors a quick 7-0 lead with 9:57 left to go in the first.
Harrah finished the night going 8-of-9 on PATs.
On Cosby’s ensuing drive, the Warriors would stuff the Eagles offense again before bringing down Cosby’s punter in the end zone for a safety giving the Warriors a 9-0 lead.
After taking the free kick to Cosby’s 35, the Warriors would strike again in two plays with Haun finding Sam Blevins on a 32-yard pass play before hitting Hyatt on a 3-yard touchdown pass. With Harrah’s kick good, the Warriors led 16-0 with 7:31 left in the first.
Once again the Eagles were forced to punt. Fielding the ball at the 50-yard line, Happy Valley’s Dylan Street took the pigskin 50 yards for a touchdown. Harrah was good again, and the Warriors led 23-0.
Happy Valley found the scoreboard one more time in the first quarter, as Haun connected with Sams on a 26-yard TD pass. Heading into the second period, Happy Valley led 30-0.
The Warriors picked up three touchdowns in the second quarter with Happy Valley senior Austin Hicks cutting loose for a 33-yard touchdown run.
Happy Valley’s Dustun Sams followed Hicks up with a 2-yard TD run and with Harrah missing his only kick of the night the Warriors led 44-0 with 7:45 left in the half.
The final score of the half came from Street, who ran in from 39 yards out to help give the Warriors a 50-0 lead heading into the half.
The Warriors scored twice in the fourth frame with Tittle rushing in a 53-yard, and a 58-yard touchdown run.
Next up for the Warriors will be a home matchup against the Unaka Rangers next Friday.
“The next game is always the most important game,” said Happy Valley senior Dylan Townsend. “We have to get back in here Monday and get ready for the next game.”
