James W. Arnett, 64, of Elk Park, N.C., formerly of Roan Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk, N.C. James was born in Elizabethton on November 27, 1951 to the late Joseph “Joe” Arnett and Bertha Winters Arnett.
James worked as a carpenter and attended St. John Free Will Baptist Church of Roan Mountain. He loved to “whittle” on wood and enjoyed spending time with his friends at Historic Elk Park Apartment complex.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 44 years, Peggy Hicks Arnett, of the home; two daughters, Amy Hughes and husband “Slick” of Elk Park, N.C., and Samantha Ferguson and husband Wayne of Butler, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Cassidy Hughes, Callie Hughes and Holden Ferguson; one brother, Jimmy Arnett of Elizabethton; and five sisters, Willie Troutman, Kay Hughes, Kathy Elliott, Jackie Johnson and Pat Jones, all of Roan Mountain. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive, as well as many friends at the Historic Elk Park School Apartments.
A service to honor the life of James W. Arnett will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, October 15, at the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Danny Blevins and Jude Hughes officiating. Music will be provided by the Hughes Family. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, or at the residence of his daughter, Amy Hughes, 89 Peter Hardin Lane, Elk Park, N.C., at any time. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 16, in the Wright Cemetery (off Heaton Hill Road in Roan Mountain, Tenn). Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Rhinehart and his brothers-in-law, Jack Troutman, Glenn Hughes, David Jones and David Johnson. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday to go in procession. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Medi Hospice Staff and the Staff of Life Care Center of Banner Elk, N.C., for the love and care shown to Mr. Arnett. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Medi Hospice Center of Newland, 1955 Newland Highway, Newland, NC 28657 in honor of James.
