Costumed Capers: Trick-or-treaters descend on Downtown

Pirates, princesses, heroes and villains filled the streets of downtown Elizabethton Monday afternoon for the annual Halloween Trick-or-Treating event.
Local business owners, churches, civic groups and organizations lined the sidewalk in the historic downtown handing out treats and treasures. Thousands roamed the downtown moving from site to site for treats.
The Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department set up two inflatables for children to play on and a disc jockey provided a selection of Halloween inspired music to keep the ghosts and goblins dancing on their way through town.
While the treats were only for the children, that didn’t stop the adults from getting in on the costume fun. Many of the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends donned costumes of their own. Some made the event a family affair by dressing the whole group in coordinating costumes.
At 4 p.m., the Parks and Recreation Department hosted a contest for the best costume that featured dozens of entrants. A panel of four judges watched as the contestants paraded by. After all the contestants had passed the judges location, the judges conferred to award first, second and third place awards for best costume.
Third prize went to an adult couple dressed as Marc Anthony and Cleopatra, who even carried her own snake as part of her costume.
Second place went to a family who competed with a themed costume based around the Kentucky Derby — featuring a jockey, the family dog dressed up as the winning horse, and a pair of race attendees complete with traditional Derby Day hats.
First prize went to a young brother and sister pair — Samantha and Peyton Ledford — who appeared in costume as Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko from the popular movie Grease. Based on the reaction of the crowd as the pair passed the review stand the two were definitely crowd favorites for the event.
