It was a standout day for the Elizabethton High School wrestling team Friday as they hosted a match inside Johnson Treadway Gym.
The Cyclones, who piled up the points with pin after pin, topped Clinton High School 51-30.
In the 138 pound bout, Elizabethton’s Tristian Bryant was able to make quick work of his Clinton High School opponent for a quick pin.
“Tristian has been putting together some really good matches here at the beginning of the year,” said EHS head coach Donnie Shipley. “I am looking for some big things out him. He had a really good showing tonight.”
Wrestling at 145 pounds, EHS’ Andrew Fontanez followed up Bryant with a pin of his own.
“Andrew is a freshman for us,” Shipley said. “He is a great addition to the program. He came through the Admiral Club in Johnson City, so he had some experience coming in.”
The Cyclones kept on rolling as Chris Taylor, competing at 182, drove his opponent to the mat for a pin. Taylor ended up wrestling in two matches while picking up two pins.
“Chris Taylor is one of my captains, and he is a strong leader,” Shipley said. “He will do anything that you ask him to do. He wrestled twice tonight and got two pins. He is everything that you want in a wrestler.”
Luke White, who fought in the heavyweight bout for the Cyclones, had the most exciting match of the evening. In a pretty even match up, White caught his opponent off guard, rolling him into a pin with just seconds left on the clock.
“He was behind most of the match but never gave up,” Shipley said about White. “He caught the kid at the end. He caught him in what we call a “fat man” roll because you see a lot of heavyweights do it. He was just wrestling hard the whole match.”
Also on hand Friday was the T.A. Dugger Middle School team. The Jr. Cyclones topped both Virginia Middle and Ridgeview as Duece Morton continued his 9-0 undefeated streak.
The Elizabethton teams will make a trip over to Tennessee High this weekend to compete in the Border Duals.
