Johnny Ray Campbell Sr., 71, of Butler, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at his residence after an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Nat and Varina Younce Campbell.
Johnny worked at North American Rayon Corporation for 25 years and was employed by the Carter County School System as a bus driver. He was also a farmer. He was a people person who was always playing jokes on everyone. He loved to go fishing and hunting.
Johnny served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He attended Fish Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Ray Campbell Jr., and by three sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 46-1/2 years, Margaret Atwood Campbell; one daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and Alan Kyte, Butler; granddaughter, Brittany Russell, Butler; grandson, John Paul Russell, Butler; great-granddaughter, Piper Raye Carpenter; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Bearl and Pat Campbell and Otis and Pat Griffey; and his sisters, Betty Andrews and husband France and Brenda Schenck and husband Donald. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 11, in the Campbell Family Cemetery with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell, the Rev. Stevie Guinn and Chris Atwood officiating. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Sunday, will be Terry Atwood, John Paul Russell, Belinda Kyte, Raymond Birchfield, Tony Griffey, Tommy Campbell, David Griffey and Jimmy Clawson. Honorary pallbearers will be Alan Kyte, Howard Rainbolt, Dean Lunceford, Dick Ward, J.R. Campbell, Frank Presnell, James Clawson, Gene Rainbolt and Ronald Reece. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Melly and Steve Eldridge for all the help they gave to Johnny during his illness. Military Honors will be by the Carter County Honor Guard.
