James W. “Jim” Garland,  73, of Rome, Ga., formerly of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, December 12, 2016, at his residence. Jim was born in Murphy, N.C., to the late William Claude and Mattie Lee Ellis Garland.
Jim was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and retired from First Tennessee Bank, after 35 years ofservice as a vice president. He was a United States Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam. Jim was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church of Rome, Ga.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 47 years, Sandra Baines Garland, of the home; his daughter, Sarah Garland, of Vienna, Va.; three sons, Charles Glen “Chuck” Garland, of Atlanta, Ga., William “Bill” Garland and wife Brintha Vilvarajah, of Memphis, Tenn., and Nath Garland and wife Melissa, of Brighton, Colo.; three grandchildren, Justin Garland, of Vienna, Va., Emma Garland, of Brighton, Colo., and Catie Garland, of Little Rock, Ark.; his sister, Margaret Timbs and husband Rex, of Johnson City, Tenn.; and two nephews, Roy and Allen Timbs.
A service to honor the life of James W. “Jim” Garland will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 17, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, Tenn., with Rev. Jeff Shafer (nephew) officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday. The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton, Tenn. Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers, may make donations to the Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 (828) 262-1980.
