Margaret Hampton, age 89, a long-term resident of Elizabethton, died peacefully January 11, 2017 at Sycamore Springs Senior Living Community. She is survived by her son, Bill Hampton, of Elizabethton and a daughter-in-law, Holly Hampton and her daughter, Dr. Harriette Hampton, of Ridgeland, Mississippi; three grandchildren, Dr. Morgan Cowan, Meryl Cowan and William Hampton; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Hampton; a brother-in-law, Patrick Hampton; two nephews, Thomas Graves, of Knoxville, TN and Richard Graves, of Lancaster, PA as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur L. Hensley and Grace Bailey Hensley; her husband of 65 years, Peter W. Hampton; a sister, Carrie Lee Graves; two brothers-in-law, Stuart Hampton and Tim Hampton as well as a nephew, Michael Hampton.
Born in 1927 in Johnson City, Tennessee, Margaret graduated from Science Hill High School and ETSU in 1947. She taught art and elementary school (5th grade) in the Elizabethton City School system until retirement. Margaret often stated, “Teaching children was my greatest privilege.” She was devoted to her family, students and community. She was the first president of the Elizabethton Woman’s Civic Club and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabethton. Margaret cared deeply about quality education, community service, and loved artistic endeavors.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Saturday, January 14, 2017 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. A private entombment service will be will be conducted at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made to Woman’s Civic Club of Elizabethton, Inc., in care of Kim Lacy, P.O. Box 2011, Elizabethton, Tennessee 37644-2011.
