Future nursing students are encouraged to visit Milligan College this week for a special look inside the profession.
Milligan will host a free preview day for the college’s nursing major on Friday, March 3, which will be open to high school students and college transfers.
Director of Admissions added the opportunity is free to the public and allows a hands-on approach of seeing what the nursing program has to offer.
Potential new Buffaloes have the opportunity to view the new Nursing Skills Lab in Hardin Hall that includes more lab space, six new beds, crash cart, teaching defibrillator and simulation isolation roon. The new additions will be available for students beginning in 2017.
“Our enrollment has been steady for our nursing program,” Wright said. “The day gives students a chance to see the new additions, speak with nursing students, and get a look at the major.”
Milligan offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing and accelerated RN-BSN Program designed for registered nurses that requires students to attend class only one day a week.
Wright added that prospective students can learn more information during the day from Dr. Melinda Collins, chair of the Area of Nursing and associate dean of the School of Sciences and Allied Health. Collins has been a registered nurse for over 25 years and previously practiced in Nashville and the Tri-Cities area. Collins has taught at Milligan for more than 20 years and will be a wealth of knowledge for interested students, Wright added.
While geared toward underclassmen in high school and transfers, the event is open to any potential high school student looking to pursue the major.
“We primarily see high school seniors and juniors,” Wright said. “But there’s no age restrictions. If there’s a freshman or sophomore that’s wanting to look at the profession, we definitely welcome it.”

Excitement continues to brew on campus following the school’s recent Sesquicentennial celebration. Along with the excitement, the further growth of the school as a whole with different programs and expansions makes the future even better moving forward, according to Wright.
“I would say there’s a lot of excitement on campus,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to students moving into their fields. Having vocational opportunities at a liberal arts college allows students to have a leg up.”
