Evangeline Blevins Ashley, 72, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with her Lord and Savior and is now celebrating with her family and friends, on Friday, March 3, 2017, from Johnson City Medical Center. Evangeline was born in Roan Mountain to the late John Sterling Blevins Sr. and Geneva Julian Blevins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband, Junior Hicks; her granddaughter, Jillian Tess Pritchard; and her special cousin, whom she considered her sister, Vickie Julian Hill.
Evangeline was a loving wife and mother and enjoyed decorating for holidays. She was a homemaker and a member of Harmony Free Will Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Roan Mountain Garden Club. Evangeline enjoyed Gospel preaching and singing. She also loved NASCAR and NFL Football.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 37 years, Terry “Gene” Ashley, of the home; four daughters, Kimberly Hughes, Michelle Perkins and husband Donnie, and Cynthia Hamby and husband Michael, all of Roan Mountain, and Sandra Pritchard and husband Randy, of Avery County, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Channing Perkins and fiancée, Jenni Pate, Dreama Birchfield and husband Jon, Marche Hughes and fiancé, Josh Guinn, Derek Perkins, Emily Pritchard, Brandon Hamby and girlfriend Holly Clawson, Justin Pritchard, Victoria Perkins and Shevon Hamby; four great-grandchildren, Samuel Hughes, Gavin Birchfield, Mackinley Perkins and Zaden Birchfield; one brother, John Sterling Blevins Jr. and wife Sharon, Kingsport; two nieces, Amanda and Amelia; one nephew, John III; and her loving pet and companion, General Lee Ashley.
A service to celebrate the life of Evangeline Blevins Ashley will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at Harmony Free Will Baptist Church, 3405 Gap Creek Road, with Rev. Brandon Young and Rev. Don Julian officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from noon until 1 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow in the Johnson-Roan View Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
