Police are continuing to investigate the death of a woman whose body was discovered inside a vehicle parked at a local retail store on Saturday.

On Thursday afternoon, Elizabethton Police Department Chief Jason Shaw said his department was still awaiting information from the autopsy and for a positive confirmation of the woman’s identity. Shaw said his investigators had hoped to hear something by Thursday.

Once the identity of the woman has been confirmed, Shaw said the department would notify the woman’s next of kin.

“The kinfolk issue is going to be a little harder, I believe,” Shaw said.

Shaw said once the family has been notified his department will release the identity of the woman as well as any other information that is available for release at that time.

The investigation into the woman’s death began on Saturday, March 25, when officers of the Elizabethton Police Department responded to the parking lot of Walmart around 9:30 p.m. regarding a welfare check on a female inside a vehicle parked at the store.

When officers arrived and checked the vehicle, they found the woman inside was deceased, according to EPD Capt. Joy Shoun.

“There is nothing to indicate there was any foul play, but we are handling it as a death investigation,” Shoun told the Elizabethton Star on Monday morning.

The investigation into the woman’s death is on-going at this time.
