It was a tough day for the Cyclone tennis teams Tuesday as they hosted Sullivan South for a Three Rivers Conference match-up.
The Elizabethton boys fell 9-0 to the Rebels, while the EHS girls lost 5-4 to South.
In the top single matches, both Claudia Calpo and Blaye Davis gave their opponents a run for their money.
Davis, during his match with South’s Austin Carter, found himself down 5-2 before battling back to make the contest 5-all. Carter, however, would hold on for an 8-6 win.
Calpo, like Davis, found herself with an early deficit but worked to stay in the match before losing 8-5 to South’s Lauren Sanders.
“She came back,” said EHS head coach LeAnne Click. “She has worked hard. In the match we played before, Claudia beat that girl. It is very close. All of the matches are going to be close today on the girls’ side.
“Blaye came back from 5-2,” Click added. “He played very hard. His opponent was very consistent and kept the ball in. It was good for Blaye to come back.”
In girls’ singles, Carole Sweeley and Abby Brown would both defeat their opponents 8-3. In girls’ double, the team of Calpo and Eliana Rangle would win 8-4 in the No. 1 match, while Jordan Teague and Sweeley won 9-8 in the No. 2 doubles contest.
