Hopwood Memorial to undergo renovation in May: Services to be temporarily held at Emmanuel

Hopwood Memorial Christian Church — located on the Milligan College campus — is in the process of receiving a makeover of sorts.
The church will undergo a $1.6 million project starting in May to renovate the church. The project is estimated to take roughly nine months to complete.
Plans include adding a two-story addition to the church building to increase space, renovate needed facilities and bring the historic building into the 21st Century by addressing accessibility needs.
Hopwood Memorial Christian Pastor Timothy Ross added the church has already raised a significant portion of the proceeds for renovations thanks to members of the congregation.
The two-story addition will feature expanded seating in the sanctuary, construction of a more spacious entry and gathering space, an elevator, increased size of the fellowship hall, improved parking around the building and landscape for the grounds.
Reedy & Sykes Architectural Design of Elizabethton, Burleson Construction of Johnson City and Ken Soergel of Johnson City Landscape Design are handling the project.
Ross stated the church is currently raising funds for the project and hopes to break ground at their location on May 7 at 11 a.m.
During the church’s renovation period, Sunday services will be moved to the Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan’s Chapel — located at 1 Walk Drive, Johnson City.
After the groundbreaking, Ross added the congregation would begin the service at Hopwood and walk as a group to their new location at Emmanuel to conclude the service as work begins.
It will be a special moment, the pastor added, as individuals will walk en mass toward the facility. Ross stated transportation would be available for people that may have trouble walking a long distance and that a possible bagpipe player will lead the walk.
Summer service times at Emmanuel will be:
• Sunday School at 9:30 a.m.
• Single Worship Service at 10:30 a.m.
“Over the years, Hopwood, Emmanuel, and Milligan have all grown together over the years,” Ross said. “I can’t say enough how thankful we are for the tremendous amount of support from Emmanuel and Milligan.”
The Hopwood Memorial Christian Church has been active at its current location since its founding in the mid-1820s. The congregation supports local, national and international ministries, provides a home to college and seminary students, and brings together groups from the local community.
