Scotts Hill uses heavy bats to drop Unaka

There just isn’t much a team can do when their opponent is on fire at the plate.
Behind 11 hits, the Scotts Hill Lady Lions topped Unaka, 10-0, in five innings Wednesday during the second day of the 2017 TSSAA Class A State Tournament at SportsCom in Murfreesboro.
Facing Lady Lions pitcher Caitlin Mitchell, the Lady Rangers recorded two hits, one from Madison Ensor and Katlyn Weaver.
“We played pretty good,” said Chambers. “We just couldn’t hit the ball. We made too many errors and got down on ourselves a little bit. We played some good teams. We just have to keep working at it.”
The loss brought Unaka’s season to an end, a season that saw the Lady Rangers go 28-15 while winning both the District 1-
A and Region 1-A titles.
“We have had a great season,” said Chambers. “I am proud of the girls. They have really worked hard this year. Their goal was to get down here. They hadn’t been down here in a few years. They got to see what it’s like. Hopefully, next year, they will get to come down again.”
For Unaka seniors Haley Fair and Sarah Hardin, Wednesday’s game was their last high school contest. Making the state tournament was the cherry on top of their careers, said the two seniors.
“It has been awesome,” said Hardin. “The community has really supported us. Our team has really come together a lot to get down here. We were so excited.”
Scotts Hill’s Shayla Phillips swung the heaviest bat as she recorded two home runs and four RBIs. Phillips’ first home run came in the first inning as the Lady Lions took a 3-0 lead heading into the second frame.
Scotts Hill went up 6-0 in third before scoring four runs in the fourth.
