A “Blizzard” of sorts is coming to 100 Bemberg Road in Elizabethton.
Members of the Regional Planning Commission approved the site plan for a Dairy Queen by unanimous decision Thursday to take over the piece of land that was the former home of the Sam Snead Tire Center located inside the Ingles Shopping Center.
The site plan, developed by Fourteen Foods based out of Minneapolis, Minn., includes an inside territory that will hold 72 patrons and an outside area to hold 20 individuals.
The only real concern was raised by Commissioner Vickie Manuel about the issue of flooding in the parking lot.
City of Elizabethton Planning and Development Director Jon Hartman stated the plan by the company includes additional landscaping to help address the issue for the future. Commissioners also praised the thorough site plan provided by Fourteen Foods, who will be handling the development of the property and operate the restaurant as the franchisee.
The motion to approve the site plan came from Wes Frazier and seconded by William Taylor.
The Sam Snead building was demolished in January by Mill Creek Construction. The company then worked with American Environmental Corporation to have the property ready for development.
A tentative timeline for an opening is pegged for either spring or summer of next year.

In other business, a site plan review for property on 2010 West Elk Avenue was effectively shot down by the commission due to lack of information.
The property, which houses Dream Dome Depot, was put on the agenda for the reasoning of combining three pieces of parcels into one property.
Taylor recommended that the site plan is deferred to the development committee then return to the planning commission. The recommendation passed with unanimous support.
