Betty Trollinger Briscoe, longtime resident of Rockville, Md., passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2017, at the age of 89.
Betty Margaret was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., on March 3, 1928, just five days shy of the 1st birthday of her only brother, Jim. She was raised in Elizabethton and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1946. From a very young age, she knew she wanted to be a nurse so a year after high school she attended Garfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, DC graduating Cum Laude in September of 1949. She went on to work at Garfield and then at Walter Reed where she met her future husband, Howard Briscoe. Howard had been shot while serving in Korea, and yes, Betty was his nurse. They were married January 12, 1951 and moved to Fort Sill, Okla.
When they returned to the area they settled in Rockville, Md., where they raised three children. During that time, she also served in PTAs and helped to establish the Booster Club at Rockville High School when it first opened. She worked as a Public Health School Nurse at Walt Whitman High and completed her career working for Montgomery County in Adult Health and Community Home Care. Her compassion, knowledge, sense of humor and caring for all that she met, endeared her to everyone.
After retirement, she continued to be very active in the Rockville Sr. Center, the Young at Heart Club and the Damascus Travel Club. In addition, she and Howard enjoyed many trips in their travel trailer, always sharing the experience with family and friends.
Betty was a devoted and active member of Rockville Presbyterian Church. She never backed away from serving others and her faith. Betty will be remembered Saturday, June 24, at 3 p.m. at Rockville Presbyterian Church (215 West Montgomery Ave. 20850), followed by an interment ceremony at the columbarium on the property. Family and friends are then invited for refreshments in the John Calvin Room of the church.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, James and Elizabeth Trollinger, and her brother, James Trollinger.
She is survived and loved dearly by her husband of 65.5 years, Howard of Rockville, Md.; her three children, Timothy Kirk Briscoe (Donna) of Kingsport, Tenn.; Suzanne Brown Briscoe (Elaine) of Roanoke, Va.; and Houston Nathaniel Briscoe (Lisa) of Rockville, Md.
Her grandchildren include David Ryan Briscoe (Amberly) of Williamsport, Md.; Michael Nathaniel Briscoe (Meghan) of Kingsport, Tn.; Jason Keith Briscoe of Perry Hall, Md.; Heather Elizabeth Briscoe (Amy) of Roanoke, Va.; and Emma Kathryn Kessinger (Bryan) of Cary, N.C. Their great-grandchildren include Hunter Zane Briscoe; Quillan Blake Briscoe; Reid Jackson Briscoe; and the beautiful children fostered by Heather and Amy.
