BOE to cipher through loaded agenda Wednesday

Even in the summer, there is never a dull moment for Elizabethton City Schools.
The system’s Board of Education is scheduled to meet Wednesday, June 28, at 6:30 p.m. to go through a variety of first-readings for board policies and other necessary housekeeping.
Lunch service at Elizabethton High School and T.A. Dugger Junior High will go through a vote as the system looks to make a minor increase to lunch prices.
Currently, EHS full price lunch is set at $2.55 and TAD is at $2.40 but the recommendation is both prices to go up by 10 cents. According to the ECS, elementary schools and the Early Learning Center participate in the community eligibility program with no charge for meals.
The reasoning for the increase is due to Section 205 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which requires school food authorities going through the National School Lunch Program to ensure “sufficient funds are provided to the nonprofit school food service account for lunches served to students not eligible for free or reduced price meals,” according to information provided by Central Office. The BOE will also looking at approving the agreement to administer the school’s nutrition program, policy statement for providing free and reduced lunch meals to students and the local agricultural productions and compliance plan.
Away from the meeting, ECS is nearing their goal of raising enough funds to cover the cost of 1,000 backpacks that will be provided during the second annual Back-2-School Bash at Citizens Bank Stadium, scheduled to take place Saturday, Aug. 5.
With ECS well past the halfway mark to cover the cost of school supplies, businesses or organizations looking to assist with sponsorship can do so by July 1. The average cost for a backpack is $16.

Following Wednesday’s meeting, the BOE will meet in separate workshops to address the ECS cybersecurity board policy and Director of Schools Dr. Corey Gardenhour’s contract.
