Members of the Carter County Rescue Squad performed three rescue operations in the past week to assist individuals in need of medical attention at three popular recreation areas throughout the county.
On Tuesday, July 4, members of the CCRS Technical Rescue Team were called to Twisting Falls, located along the Elk River in the Poga community, to assist a woman with a medical emergency.
Tech Team members hiked in and provided medical assistance to the woman, who was then able to walk out of the woods according to CCRS Rescue Coordinator John Burleson.
The mission to assist the woman lasted around two hours, Burleson said.
On Saturday, the Tech Team responded to the Laurel Falls area, in the Hampton community, to help a man who had fallen and was injured.
“He fell about 15 feet,” Burleson said, adding the man suffered some injuries in the fall. “He got up and tried to walk himself out, and he got confused and turned around.”
Tech Team members hiked in and found the man, treated his injuries, and got him back out of the woods, Burleson said. The man was then transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
That rescue operation lasted around four hours, Burleson said.
Rescuers responded to The Blue Hole, located in the Stoney Creek community, on Sunday to assist a man who had fallen and was injured at the popular waterfall.
“We had to set up a couple of rope systems to get him out,” Burleson said. “He was flown out by Wings.”
The operation to rescue the man took around two-to-three hours due to needing to set up the rope system to lift the injured man out of the area and get him to safety, according to Burleson.
With summer in full swing and residents and tourists alike heading to the county’s waterfalls as a way to beat the heat, Burleson reminds everyone to practice basic safety precautions.
“Use an abundance of caution in these areas, especially when it has been raining,” Burleson said.
