Local coalition utilizing social media to promote drug prevention

With many faces of addictions, one local coalition is taking to the web to highlight different preventative measures.
Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition unveiled “Faces of Addiction,” a 30-minute video spotlighting the stories of three different individuals’ bouts with addiction, on Facebook Thursday.
Residents had an opportunity to view the movie, created by local videographer Josh Wilson, last week during a special showing inside Elizabethton Parks and Recreation’s gymnasium.
“It was a great evening,” Jilian Reece, CCDP director, said. “We were able to share the stories of different individuals and how they were able to overcome addiction.”
The movie serves as an official kickoff for the coalition’s campaign to use social media to raise awareness. Reece stated that Wilson and Bryan Smith, with Silver Angels, worked to film additional content to be used for upcoming videos.
Notables community members were interviewed, including Elizabethton Planning and Development Director Jon Hartman, Elizabethton Police Chief Jason Shaw, members of the Elizabethton Twins and Jason Witten, city native and current tight end for the Dallas Cowboys.
“The shorter pieces will be released in the coming weeks,” Reece said. “Each goes into detail about how addiction affects the community. There are so many different faces of addiction. Our goal at Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition is to raise awareness, and we hope to accomplish that with these videos.”
Videos will be able to be utilized as learning pieces for different organizations and schools, Reece added.
Momentum continues to build with the efforts being forged by CCDP, and Reece took time out to thank the support from the community.
“We’re so excited about the support,” she said. “There’s no way I could do this alone. So many people have stepped up to help fight against drug and substance abuse.”
