The legendary Daniel Boone would have been proud of how the Elizabethton Cyclones went hunting for Grizzlies on Friday night at Citizens Bank Stadium.
And although the Cyclones had some damp ammunition to start the game off, it didn’t take long for shots to begin finding their mark as Elizabethton brought to close a successful week of homecoming festivities by taking a few bear hides in a 49-0 whipping of their visitors from Grainger County.
The Cyclones built a 14-0 advantage by the end of the first quarter on a 2-yard scoring run by Corey Russell and a 71-yard touchdown pass from Carter Everett to Evan Perkins that brought the huge crowd of Cyclone supporters to their feet.
Kade Hensley and Jaxton Holly took turns on kicking the point-after attempts.
Elizabethton left no doubt adding 22 more points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 36-0 by the half.
Everett continued to find the bulls-eye as the junior signal caller found his favorite target, Ryan Wetzel, on back-to-back scoring tosses in less than 23 seconds with one covering 35 yards and the second covering 9 yards.
Russell converted a 2-point conversion on the first score and Hensley booted the PAT on the second score.
Everett would go back to Perkins again from 13 yards out with just 50 seconds remaining before the intermission.
Dylan Nordby blasted the point after to conclude the scoring in the half.
Miss Cayden Davison was crowned as the 2017 Homecoming Queen during halftime as Miss Davison was escorted by Mr. Matthew Dailey. 2016 Homecoming Queen Miss Grace Roberts did the honors of crowning Davison.
With a running clock, a lot of new faces saw the field in the second half for both teams.
Sophomore Cameron Trimm found pay dirt on a 7-yard gallop with four minutes left in the third quarter.
The point-after attempt was blocked.
Gavin Lowe put the icing on the cake in the fourth quarter as the junior cashed in from 6-yards away with 1:41 remaining in the game.
Holly drilled the point after down the middle to give the game its final score of 49-0.
With the win, the Cyclones move to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Elizabethton makes the trek to Bristol next Friday night to take on the Tennessee High Vikings in the Stone Castle.
