Laughter filled the air on Friday and smiles of joy could be seen all around as students from local schools attended the annual special education picnic hosted by the Elizabethton Kiwanis Club.
Nearly 200 children from special education programs with both the Carter County and Elizabethton City School Systems flocked to Cat Island Park to enjoy the festivities.
This year marked the third time the Kiwanis Club has hosted the event for the children, and Club President David LaVeau said it was the largest turnout they have seen so far.
The Kiwanis Club raises funds for the annual picnic through their downtown American flag distributions throughout the year. Lunch for the picnic was provided by the Kiwanis Club and Chik-fil-A.
Members of the Unaka High School Key Club volunteered to help with the event by serving food and spending time with the children.
The Kiwanis typically hold the annual picnic in the Spring but decided to host it this year in the fall in hopes of avoiding the rains that typically hit the area during the Spring.
As part of the event, children were able to play together with their classroom friends as well as making new ones. The children enjoyed all the playground equipment as well as games on the lawn and rides around the park on a golf cart.
