For 65 years members of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge have served the community, and now the Lodge is inviting the community to celebrate a milestone birthday with them.

The Elizabethton Elks Lodge, Number 1847, is hosting a special event to celebrate their 65th birthday and everyone is invited. The celebration will take place on Saturday, October 7, beginning at 2 p.m. and running throughout the afternoon and into the evening at the Lodge, which is located at 1000 N. Sycamore St., Elizabethton. The event is free and open to the public.

Since the Lodge was founded in 1952, members thought hosting an event with a 1950s theme would be the perfect way to mark the occasion. Ladies are encouraged to don their poodle skirts, and the gentlemen are encouraged to throw on their blue jeans and t-shirts and grease their hair back to get in the spirit.

The event will feature music from the 50’s as well as food and drinks.

“We’re trying to find some of our former ER’s (Exalted Rulers) and former members and get them to come out if they are able,” Exalted Ruler Jacklyn Morris said.

Those planning to attend are asked to confirm their attendance by calling the Lodge at 423-543-2341 or e-mailing Lodge Secretary Sherri Ebam at sherri.ebam@gmail.com.

The event will also serve to introduce members of the community to the Lodge and the work it does to help their neighbors.

“We do a lot in the community,” Morris said. The Lodge routinely helps local veterans groups, supports special education programs, provides scholarships for graduating seniors, and supports local non-profits and service agencies that provide programs to those in need in the community.

Morris hopes once the community meets the Lodge members and sees how active the group is in the community more individuals will want to become Elks members.

There are a couple of restrictions on membership to the Elks Lodge.

“You must believe in God, that is a necessity,” Morris said.

Also, those applying for membership cannot be a convicted felon. A current member of the Lodge has to propose an applicant for membership and then the Lodge votes whether or not to grant the membership request.

Applications are available at the Elizabethton Elks Lodge, located at 1000 N. Sycamore St., Elizabethton, or online at www.elks.org.
