Barbara Joyce Powell Fraley, 71, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Elisha H. and Mary Mae Garrison Powell.
Barbara was employed at Wal-Mart for 10 years. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for several years. She was an excellent cook, loved to go camping and loved her grand dogs.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert “Buster” Powell and Jimmy “Fish” Powell; a half sister, Iva Jean Hyder; and two special grand puppies, Bailey and Bogey.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Bill Fraley; two sons, Michael Fraley and fiancée Brenda Nave, and Brian Fraley and wife Holly, all of Elizabethton; a daughter, Mary Ann Reed; a granddaughter, Alyiah Reed; a step-granddaughter, Jayln Hill; her step-mother, Lucille Powell; her sisters, Brenda Rasmussen, Phyllis Crain, Linda Garland and Cleo Hicks; her brothers, Larry Powell, Randy Powell and Junior “Pooner” Powell; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Barbara Joyce Powell Fraley will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 30, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Nathan Jennings and the Rev. Jack Lloyd officiating. Music will be provided by Carol Bowers, organist, and the Rev. Nathan Jennings. The graveside service and interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, October 1, in the Highland Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Sunday, will be Sam Bradshaw, Greg Moreland, Kenneth Nave, Floyd Nave, Rick Elliott, Larry Burrow, Danny Bowman and Jody Combs. Honorary pallbearers will be her church family, employees and former employees of the Elizabethton Police Department, employees and former employees of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department, members of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Roger Deal, Skip Taylor, Marvin Watson, Art Smithdeal, Larry Shell, Tom “Yogi” Bowers, Danny Hilbert, Mike Peters, Roger Crowe, Clyde Croy and Dave Ryan. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Broad Street Hair Design, employees of the ICU/ER Sycamore Shoals Hospital, members of the Carter County EMS, Judy Deloach and the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home, the staff of Hillview Nursing Home, Nancy Markland and staff of Wayne & Nancy’s Kitchen, Joe and Vickie Hilton, Wendy Perry and Jody Combs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at her residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Sunday to go to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Free Will Baptist Church Youth Group, 706 First Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
